Here is a report from the last event of the year reviving a once popular venue, we had over 2,000 people on board and had a superb weekend.
WSYC would like to thank the Canal River Trust and the Chesterfield Canal Trust for all their efforts as joint organisers of the rally. But Special thanks must go to the Mal Nicholson and Crew of Spider T as she was the star of the weekend. Having helped with the preperation and journey of Spider to and from Stockwith, I now fully appreciate the amount of time, planning and effort involved in what they have done for us.
If I might add a quote from 82yr old Frank Major, who at the age of 10 was a mate to his dad and later a skipper himself running barges around the estuary and all her tributaries. On the voyage back to Keadby Frank was a guest crew member and when asked if he was ok (he was steering at the time) with a big grin he replied "Aye lad I'm ome again".

QUEENS DIAMOND JUBILEE
Humber Super Sloop Spider T confirmed to take part in the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant.
The afternoon of Sunday 3rd June will see a thousand boats gather on the river Thames in celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. Spider T's voyage to Scotland date added; 28/09/2011

A NORTH Lincolnshire based sailing vessel has gained the runners-up slot in the National Historic Ships Flagship of the Year 2011 ranking.
The Spider T, based at Keadby, finished above short-listed historic ships including the last remaining sea going paddle steamer Waverley, and vessels Glance, Havengore, Irene, Pinnace 199 and the Fairmile.
But the Humber super sloop, built at Warren’s Shipyard, New Holland, was unable to wrest the top spot from the Lerwick based Shetland Fifie fishing vessel, Swan.
The director of National Historic Ships, Martyn Heighton, said: “The quality of entries has gone from strength to strength, making the decision as to which is the winning vessel very difficult. After much deliberation the accolade has been given to Swan with Spider T a very strong runner-up.”
In a message to Spider T owner Mal Nicholson of High Street, Burringham, Mr Heighton said: “The application of Spider T was very strong but not quite strong enough to pip Swan, the declared winner. However, your entry was very impressive not least because of the extensive sailing programme.”
In addition to localised sailings Spider T plans to sail to Scotland for festivities connected with the 200th anniversary of the Bell Rock lighthouse in August and the accolade included £250 towards promotion of the Spider T and National Historic Ships.
“It is a great accolade for the vessel and everyone interested in her,” said Mr Nicholson.
He said it highlighted the strength of shipbuilding in North Lincolnshire’s past and in particular the genius of Frederick Warren who was ahead of his time and passed on his skills by teaching in local colleges.
Mr Nicholson said the accolade consolidated her future and recognition of her significance. “It demonstrates her pedigree. She is like a Grade I listed building being part of the National Historic Fleet. Hopefully it will secure her future long after I have gone.
The knowledge and skills of members of the Humber Keel and Sloop Preservation Society, in her initial stages of restoration had been vital as had visits from past master who sought to impress on him the pedigree of the vessel so it would not be forgotten.
The vessel and others from North Lincolnshire are featured in Journalist Chris Horan’s book Humber Sail and History: Riverside and Waterways Tales Part I, priced £13, is available from the Spider T’s website www.spidert.co.uk at local outlets or direct from the author (cheques to Chris Horan) c/o 22 Priory Crescent, Scunthorpe, DN17 1HX by post, £15, including postage and packing.
